One proposal that deserves consideration would continue the Esperanto theme: tenth=dekono, hundredth=centono, thousandth=milono, millionth=milionono, billionth=miliardono
Editorial: Submultiples of Monero
Contrary to previous editorials, this one is a proposal
Table
Denomination | Amount | Symbol |
---|---|---|
Decinero | 0.1 XMR | dXMR |
Centinero | 0.01 XMR | cXMR |
Millinero | 0.001 XMR | mXMR |
Micronero | 0.000001 XMR | μXMR or uXMR[1] |
Tacoshi | 0.00000001 XMR | tac[2] |
Nanonero | 0.000000001 XMR | nXMR |
Piconero | 0.000000000001 XMR | pXMR[3] |
Notes:
[1] Since the Greek letter mu (μ) is difficult to type on some keyboards, the visually similar letter u is a common replacement (like for μtorrent/utorrent)
[2] Originally, tacoshi was a joke proposal for the name of the lowest multiple of Monero (thus it was a synonym for piconero). As Monero is increasingly being accepted up to the eight decimals, the need for a name for the one-hundred-millionth of Monero became more prevalent. Tacoshi fills this exact niche: the usually smallest amount of Monero available
[3] Monero, like Bitcoin, in indefinitely divisible so, technically, a femtonero could be possible… but unlikely.
Making-of
On September 28, Tacotime proposed that we use ISO submultiples. Three days later, on oct.ber 1st, I proposed to add an apheresis (truncating the beginning of a word, so that we stick to a manageable amout of syllables (four syllables, which is already one more than the suggested maximum).
oct. 01 01:54:05 Guys some days ago, there was a semi-serious discussion about the name for the submultiples of Monero and someone mentionned SI is good. Problem is, it ends up with a lot of syllables. So this night I had an epiphany (yeah I know; couldn't resist). Apheresis is my solution
oct. 01 01:54:08 Decinero 1 dXMR
oct. 01 01:54:08 Centinero 2 cXMR
oct. 01 01:54:08 Millinero 3 mXMR
oct. 01 01:54:08 Micronero 6 uXMR
oct. 01 01:54:08 Nanonero 9 nXMR
oct. 01 01:54:08 Piconero 12 pXMR
Propagation
Then I proposed it publicly on dnaleor' thread Names for the various amounts of Monero and on December 23rd, I proposed it to moneromoo when we were testing tippero.
déc. 23 02:21:39 ISO + apheresis
déc. 23 02:21:51 In the core team, we are interested in ISO
déc. 23 02:21:58 apheresis is my addition
déc. 23 02:22:10 to avoid too long of a name
déc. 23 02:22:32 apheresis being.. removal of the prefix "mo" ?
déc. 23 02:23:05 decinero 1 dXMR
déc. 23 02:23:05 centinero 2 cXMR
déc. 23 02:23:05 millinero 3 mXMR
déc. 23 02:23:05 micronero 6 uXMR
déc. 23 02:23:05 nanonero 9 nXMR
déc. 23 02:23:05 piconero 12 pXMR
So here it is. And if you wonder why we have nanonero (yes, I know this particular alliteration is not great) and piconero, this is because Monero has 12 decimal places (compared to Bitcoin's 8 decimal places, although in both cases it is infinitely extensible). Not that nano and pico will be used anytime soon (particularly nanonero).
